Destiny players had spent hundreds if not thousands of hours building up their characters and getting fully invested in them, so there was collective baffled dismay when Bungie confirmed that character progress would not transfer over to Destiny 2...because reasons.

Though your character's appearance would transfer, none of your gear, weapons, or even your Eververse items paid for with real money would be available in Destiny 2.

Neither Bungie nor publisher Activision have ever given fans a particularly satisfying explanation for this, while the in-game reasoning was that the villainous Ghaul simply destroyed the Tower and all of your possessions along with it.

Given that Bungie originally promised a "10-year plan" for Destiny, for them to betray the fans who made the first game such a stonking hit was both puzzling and insulting.
