10 WORST Ways Video Games Took Away Your Favourite Powers

4. The Edincoat Dies With Aeris - Final Fantasy VII

Aeris' out-of-nowhere demise in Final Fantasy VII is one of the most shocking and upsetting moments in video game history. It becomes even more upsetting, though, when you realise that anything she has equipped on her person, with the exception of her accessories and Materia, is now lost.

What's especially irksome about this is that, shortly before Aeris was felled by Sephiroth's blade, there was a good chance you'd recently picked up the Edincoat, a rare piece of armour which you also may have just equipped to, you guessed it, Aeris.

As a result, it's highly likely that you ended up losing the Edincoat mere moments after acquiring it, even though there isn't really any in-narrative reason why Cloud couldn't get the equipment back from Aeris' corpse.

Players in-the-know have a brief opportunity to de-equip items from Aeris prior to her death, but for the overwhelming majority of fans, it was a most irritating surprise.

Sure, you can go out of your way to get another Edincoat, but there's no good reason for the game to force you to do this.
