10 WORST Ways Video Games Took Away Your Favourite Powers

3. An Earthquake Wipes Out The Ability To Breathe Underwater - Ecco The Dolphin: The Tides Of Time

Sega's 1992 action-adventure classic Ecco the Dolphin requires the player to keep an eye on their air meter, surfacing for air periodically in order not to lose health and eventually die.

But near the end of the game, Ecco comes into contact with the ancient being known as the Asterite, which grants Ecco numerous powers, including most handily the ability to breathe underwater.

But the sequel, Ecco the Dolphin: The Tides of Time, begins with the death of the Asterite, resulting in all of Ecco's abilities being snatched away early in the game.

As such, you once again need to manage that pesky air meter, as was one of the most laborious elements of the original game.

This is classic table-resetting storytelling at its most transparent, because we wouldn't want the player to be having too much fun now, would we?
