6. Sim City

Not the newest Sim City, oh no, we're referring to the original series that helped foster the gigantic behemoth of expectation and hype that was swiftly cut down in one arching swoop thanks to EA's broken servers last year. An attempt at a fresh start for the franchise by reverting back to the original name was a good one in practice, but instead it's turned into one of the biggest laughing stocks in the industry. Flash back to whichever was your first Sim City experience though and remember just how groundbreaking and technologically impressive just staring at your creation was. As is always the case when you look back on graphics that were labelled as 'cutting edge' or 'revolutionary' for 1989, these days they stand as a huge marker for how far we've come. With stat-crunching meters and many things to balance to ensure your city flourishes, subsequent iterations on this initial formula would add everything from street-level walkthroughs to giant rampaging monsters that could undo all your handiwork. Sim City birthed the entire Sims genre in itself, and although The Sims would take the core idea and apply it perfectly to actual people and animals, it's with these humungous cities where many of us started out.
