11 Facts You Never Knew About The Development Of Metal Gear Solid

1. Metal Gear Solid Is Pretty Much A Remake Of Metal Gear 2

Although the original Metal Gear Solid is considered to be the father of mechanics and features that would later define video games as a medium, the very same ideas were actually first conjured up in that title's predecessor, Metal Gear 2. While at first glance the two games seem radically different (after all, Metal Gear 2 retains the simple 2D top-down gameplay style that defined those early releases), the biggest set-pieces are actually shared across both experiences. Both feature an opening level in a storage room that introduces the mechanics before Snake takes an elevator up to the main section of the game. Grey Fox shows up in both as a mysterious voice in codec conversations who cryptically gives Snake hints on his mission. There's even a set-piece ripped verbatim where you have to run up and down staircases in a hanger while engaging with enemies and turrets. The list goes on. While it's not a straight remake, a good percentage of Solid's gameplay and set-pieces were ripped directly from the previous game, making a back-to-back playthrough a rather familiar experience.
