The large majority of the Battlefield community reacted negatively to the Battlefield 5 reveal trailer. It featured a mixture of cinematic visuals and gameplay, but also focused on a female soldier with a prosthetic arm. This led to a slew of people complaining about the execution of the trailer, and raised concerns about the historical accuracy of the game.

When asked about these concerns in an interview with Gamasutra, Söderlund responded by saying that if fans did not like the creative decisions that went into the game, they did not have to buy it.

The game would then sell less copies than was expected, and was blasted by the community for its poor handling of player feedback and live services. It was Söderlund’s comments that would be remembered as the main reason for why the game did not perform well.

We already know that game development is hard enough as it, especially when making one of the size and scale of Battlefield V. But when individuals like Söderlund make statements like that, it can throw a spanner into an entire games marketing strategy and tarnish all the hard work of its developers.
