11 Hugely-Anticipated Video Games You Won't Believe Got Cancelled

2. Gotham By Gaslight

Before Arkham Asylum, Batman's foray into 3D gaming was most recently defined by the spectacularly-naff Batman: Vengeance, the Rise of Sin Tsu or the actually-not-too-bad Batman Begins tie-in.

This would have blown them all away though. Just look at that ridiculously cobbled-together costume from the concept art above, or the glum, Dark Knight Returns-esque costume below. Ben Affleck's stature ain't got anything on how brilliantly stocky this version of the Bat was set to be, and although it would see some semblance of life inside Arkham; Origins as an unlockable costume, the full game itself - that was based off a fantastically dark one-shot novel of the same name - never saw the light of day.

Developed by Day 1 Studios - those of first-person horror shooter F.E.A.R fame - you can see just how well their atmospheric tendencies were transferring across to a character that revels in the shadows, with a perfectly animated cape and many steampunk-looking street corners providing a great tone to your skulking through the victorian-themed night. Information on the title is scarce aside from the gameplay footage above, and the knowledge that the project was canned in relation to THQ's closure, when they couldn't secure the rights to keep going.

We don't know about you but the very idea of a super-weighty Batman whose costume is whirring away as he battles a steampunk Joker in the midst of Victorian England is an idea at least the comic managed to deliver on. Why this idea wasn't picked back up following the huge success of the Batman:Arkham series is beyond us, but here's hoping that's remedied at some point after Arkham Knight finally releases next year.
