11 Severely Underrated Xbox One Games You Must Play
8. Volgarr The Viking
Okay, you got me, Volgarr is currently is reportedly coming to PS4 at some point, but for now it's an Xbox One exclusive and most likely will be for a good few more months. Regardless, Volgarr was kickstarted into being by Crazy Viking Studios - essentially a two-man coding team of Kris Durschmidt and Taron Millet - who sought to make their own rock-hard 2D hack n' slasher that would transport modern players back to the astoundingly difficult days of the 1980s. It's certainly a flooded market, the whole 'old-school retro slasher' thing, but Volgarr does so rather like Shovel Knight; by presenting a sense of control that allows for the perfect amount of execution across its various levels. Thing is, Volgarr is brutally hard, like absolutely-insane, 'could-be-a-device-in-Guantanamo' levels of mental torture. Checkpoints laugh at your assumption they exist, enemies will swarm on you like the most impossible parts of Mega Man, and Dark Souls-levels of animation-watching are paramount if you want to know when to attack and when to bide your time. If you'd always heard about games like Ghosts n' Goblins eating peoples' patience for breakfast, Volgarr challenges you to overcome its tried n' tested ways, the reward being nothing more (or less) than the sheer pride of doing so.
