11 Terrible Video Game Collectibles That Were A Waste Of Time

10. Banana Medals - Donkey Kong 64

Nintendo 64 lived through the golden age of "collect-a-thons". Millions had fun finding musical notes in Banjo-Kazooie and Stars in the soon-to-be-remastered Mario 64. However, Donkey Kong 64 took the collecting to the extreme.

Donkey Kong 64 is another Rare classic which carried along a reasonably enjoyable adventure (so long as you purge the DK Rap from your mind). Yet one of its main faults was the heavy emphasis on collecting bananas.

To progress, the player needs Banana Medals. Each Banana Medal requires 75 bananas, and each member of the DK team can only pick up bananas in the right colour. With 40 banana medals to collect, that's 3,000 bananas total.

The game's insane collectible library is famous to this day. A Hat in Time developer Jonas Kærlev went as far as to say the game most likely killed off the "collect-a-thon" genre altogether:

I don't want to blame it all on Donkey Kong 64, but it's partially at fault.
