The Metro franchise takes place in post-apocalyptic world in which humans have been forced underground by deadly radiation and dangerous mutants.

Around 40,000 survivors of the nuclear holocaust live in the tunnels of the Moscow Metro, eking out an existence while trying to co-exist with the horrors that have become a reality in their day-to-day lives.

The tunnels themselves are filled with a variety of threats, including mutants, lethal levels of radiation and bandits.

Travelling between the stations which serve as hubs for the underground society is dangerous, and as a result much of the tunnels remains unexplored.

Journeying into the dark tunnels of the Metro is one of the most uncomfortable experiences in gaming, atmospherically designed to unsettle the player.

Adding to this, the Metro games are punishing to the inexperienced, lending a sense of credibility to the characters' claims of the danger lurking in the dark of the old subway tunnels.

Less a specific area and more the setting for an entire game, there are people who find the series so unnerving that it's difficult to enjoy, and if that doesn't earn it a place on this list, nothing will.
