11 Video Game Endings That Totally Trolled Gamers

The Ending: Summarising the ending of Metal Gear Solid 2 is a headache in of itself, so we'll keep it short. After Raiden discovers that he's been fighting through a simulation for the whole freaking game, Arsenal Gear decimates a decent portion of New York, and in the final boss fight, Raiden kills his adoptive dad (and former President of the United States) Solidus Snake, who also happens to be kitted out in a robotic octopus outfit. Then Snake shows up, and has a long talk with Raiden about his future, accompanied by red-tinted live-action clips of New Yorkers going about their day, while the background characters in the cut-scene apparently don't care that terrorists just ruined a bit chunk of their city. As if that wasn't enough, a final conversation between Snake and Otacon reveals that, though they found the identities of the Patriots, they've all been dead for 100 years.

How It Trolled Players: After the relatively logical ending of the original MGS, this was just too much for a lot of players, who weren't exactly thrilled about having to sit through a philosophical lecture on genes and the future. Kojima's game is nothing if not ambitious (and frequently singled out as the first truly "postmodern" game), but considering all we hoped for was a bada** action showdown, this relentless assault of expectation-confounding twists was more irritating and confusing than exciting. As if trolling us with the whole Raiden thing wasn't bad enough, we then get this overblown nonsense, and a final twist regarding the Patriots that just leaves us even more restless and exasperated rather than satisfied.
