Although the Yakuza series has maintained a steady fanbase over the past decade, it's never really expanded beyond its niche audience. The tide is starting to turn though, and the recent prequel was one of the year's biggest success stories, opening up the series to a new player-base in the West who are only just jumping into the oddball underworld of these iconic gaming gangsters.

Already out in Japan, the sixth release is said to be just as good as the best instalments in the franchise, pushing the series forward with even more ambitious combat mechanics and open world design.

Doubling down on the core fighting system while putting even more focus on player exploration and taking part in the endlessly enjoyable side activities littered around the title's sandbox, the sequel is shaping up to be another solid entry into a set of action games that only seem to be getting more enjoyable as time goes on.

It's not going to completely change the face of the genre, but riding the current wave of interest in Japanese action-RPGs like Yakuza 0 and Persona 5, Song of Life may give the series the push it needs to finally become as big in the West as it is in the East.
