Mario Kart’s arrival back in 1992 defined the kart-racing genre. With its simplified racing mechanics, it inspired many publishers to copy this formula with their own franchises but, Crash Nitro Kart aside, most reviewed poorly, giving the genre a reputation for cheap cash-ins.

Back in 2001, Konami wanted in on the action and released Konami Krazy Racers for the Game Boy Advance. Playing similarly to Super Mario Kart with an item system, collectable coins and cartoonish design, it included 12 playable characters.

Drawing from their existing franchises, this approach mixed together Castlevania’s Dracula and Metal Gear Solid’s Gray Fox, alongside further representatives from Gradius, Twinbee and more.

It made for a bizarre mashup but unlike many kart racers, it turned out to be a thoroughly enjoyable game.
