The rise of indie gaming proves the validity of the age-old "gameplay over graphics" argument, but there's no doubt having a "Wow!" factor can help make a good game even better.

Case in point, the sublimely beautiful Star Wars: Squadrons.

Many have praised Sqaudrons' stellar (badoom-tsh) combat, touting it as a triumphant return for the long-dormant space-combat genre. And they are right!

Developers Motive Studios did a cracking job updating the space-sim gameplay of '90s hits like X-Wing and FreeSpace for a modern audience, offering a host of customisable options designed to appeal to casual Star Wars fans and dedicated gamers alike.

However, what really made the game sparkle was its gorgeous visuals. Squadrons offered some of the year's most spectacular vistas, from dogfighting in an angry, crackling nebula to skimming across the surface of exquisitely detailed capital ships.

To dust off an old cliché, Squadrons excellent graphics really did bring the Star Wars universe to life, stirring emotions our tired, jaded hearts hadn't felt since Rogue Leader on the Gamecube.
