Penny Arcade wrote a comic about how any one of Hades' excellent character designs could be considered the crowning achievement of a normal artist's career. They're not wrong - Jen Zee, SuperGiant Games titanically talented art director knocked it out of the park for each of Hades' mythological cast members.

The best part? That insane amount of detail and talent is evident in every aspect of the game.

Hades is one of those games that just sings. Every single facet was meticulously honed through a two year odyssey through Early Access, and it shows in the end product.

Combat - so often the weakness in SuperGiant's output - is a frenetic, visceral delight, the sound direction is stirring and evocative and the writing... Good God, the writing is fantastic.

Zagreus, the offspring of the eponymous Hades and the game's protagonist, was 2020's most likeable protagonist. Despite being trapped in a Sisyphean cycle of doomed escape attempts from the Greek underworld, Zagreus never loses his empathy for the people around him.

Zagreus' genuine desire to help each of the underground denizens he meets in his repeated journeys through Hell, combined with SuperGiant's typically high quality of writing, successfully delivered the message we all needed to hear in 2020: We're all in Hell, but we're all in Hell together.
