From one aesthetic extreme to the other, Sucker Punch's achingly beautiful Ghosts of Tsushima proved to be a worthy swansong for the PS4.

Like Star Wars Squadrons, Tsushima is a good game elevated into something special by its excellent art direction.

Travelling across medieval Japan, with its verdant cherry blossoms, lush rice fields and oil-painting sunsets, was like being a tourist in the world's largest scenic spot - a welcome feeling after 2020 curtailed the travel plans of so many of us.

Fortunately, there's also a damn good game to back up the visual splendour.

Sucker Punch crafted a surprisingly affecting story on the age old dilemma of honour over reason, but the true star of the show is the combat. Played on the appropriately titled "Lethal" mode, Tsushima gave players the most gripping sword fights in gaming since Bushido Blade on the PS1.

PS5 games like GodFall may have shown off the graphical wizardy of the next generation, but Ghosts of Tsushima proved the truth behind the age old adage: It's not what you've got, it's what you do with it.
