The early run of Final Fantasy games (through until 5) followed a similar approach when crafting a Boss Battle Theme: it was essentially a darker, more menacing sounding version of the regular theme. Final Fantasy IV followed a similar pattern, improving on the superb regular theme (itself a candidate for this list) to create the first genuinely brilliant boss theme and still to this date, one of the best. This was the genesis of crafting an identity into boss battle themes; a process that would eventually go on to define the battles themselves. You wont remember every boss battle from every game but you will remember every theme. For the newer generation of Final Fantasy fans, I would recommend taking a listen at one of Final Fantasy IV's original soundtracks (there have been 3 released)... it's where the dynasty of Final Fantasy music truly began.
