9. Yakuza Kiwami

Yakuza Kiwami
Sega

Thanks to Yakuza 0 finally landing in the west and establishing a foothold in the sales charts, finally Sega's high-kicking, brawl-happy plot twist-a-thon is getting the worldwide recognition it deserves.

A completely over the top look at Yakuza life in all its forms - from extorting karaoke bars to breaking fingers down rat-infested back alleys - the series has been going strong in the east for over a decade. Gameplay-wise you'll alternate between some supremely brutal combat, incorporating weapons of all shapes and sizes, light and heavy attacks and athletic finishers with quirky side quests, mini-games and exploration.

Kiwami is an immaculately well made remake of the 2005 original, completely reworking graphics to be more in-line with the modern instalments, and updating combat to flesh out main-man Kazuma Kiryu's moveset. The first Yakuza has one of the best stories of the entire franchise - hence why it became a franchise in the first place - and if you missed it 12 years ago, this is an essential purchase.
