Don't go grabbing those pitchforks just yet. There is little point disputing that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a terrific game and well-deserving of its myriad Game of the Year awards, but things got a little out-of-hand when so many rushed to deem it not only one of the best games ever made, but perhaps even the very best video game ever.

As gorgeous as it looks and as satisfying as the moment-to-moment gameplay is, there are undeniable issues: the weapon degradation mechanic is infuriating, the story is nothing, too much of the core gameplay loop feels repetitive, the combat is disappointingly simplistic and the open-world feels oddly empty at times.

It's a testament to the game's overall thrall that it can overcome most of these flaws and still deliver an excellent experience, but the number of outlets that jumped to award the game 10/10s and call it an Earth-shattering game-changer was nothing short of ridiculous.
