And finally, we come to probably the most influential video game of 2017, but also the most disappointing. PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds popularised the Battle Royale video game with its much-imitated big-scale 100-player mayhem, but it's also plagued by a litany of technical issues which hold it back from realising its full potential.

Even with it being officially released at the end of last year, PUBG is still rife with bugs and horribly optimised for even well-oiled PCs, to say nothing of the botched Xbox One launch. That even meaty rigs can struggle to play the game above 30 FPS is infuriating for a game that, at its core, is so much damn fun.

Ultimately, though, many may simply opt to jump to the less-demanding thrills of any one of its numerous imitators, most popularly Fortnite, which is free-to-play, more visually appealing than PUBG (with its more cartoonish style) and actually runs worth a damn.

Perhaps one day PUBG will be whipped into workable shape for a wider audience, but at present it doesn't nearly begin to live up to its incredible potential (at least for those without a rig powerful enough to brute-force good performance out of it).
