Dark Souls 2 was well received by the media at the time of its release, raked in its fair share of sales, and kept up the momentum of the Souls series to hype people up for Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3. But sandwiched by brilliance, this solid middle-man hasn't been treated kindly by hindsight.

Once the initial excitement of its launch faded, it was open season for slamming into Dark Souls 2. People bemoaned the fact that the series' visionary creator Hidetaka Miyazaki hadn't worked on it, resulting in a much more linear world design, a less coherent story, and apparently too many 'big dudes in armour' boss fights (11 out of 32, by my count).

Some of these criticisms are legitimate, but what about the improved combat mechanics, awesome PvP gameplay, and the fact that, well, it's more Dark Souls? The Scholar of the First Sin came with all the DLC and a tweaked story too, making the whole thing much more coherent. Though by this point it seemed that people had already condemned the game as the ugly duckling of the series.
