It goes without saying that sound plays a huge part in a game like Arkham Asylum, and the developers needed to make sure that Batman's moves and equipment sounded as cool as they looked.

The world of sound design - whether it's movies or video games - is always an inspired place, but the engineers truly got creative when working on this first Batman title, and that extended to the entire franchise.

To create the sound of the caped crusader's explosive gel, for instance, the devs simply used three cans of whipped cream 'firing' simultaneously.

That's one of the more well-known examples, but an interview with the sound designer of Arkham City shed some more light on the items used to craft the effects. He explained that celery snapping doubles for broken bones, while Batman's cape is made from the sounds of a leather jacket being flapped against the mic.
