12 Times Movies Got Video Games Wrong

8. "Shadows" Of The Colossus - Reign Over Me

Reign Over Me Adam Sandler Don Cheadle
Columbia Pictures

This cult drama starring Adam Sandler and Don Cheadle is a damn good movie and honestly features one of the more interesting depictions of video games in cinema, with Sandler's bereaved sad sack Charlie playing Shadow of the Colossus in order to cope with the loss of his family in the 9/11 attacks.

There's a clear parallel between Charlie conquering the game and dealing with his depression, so it's a shame that the film ends up skimping on the finer details elsewhere.

For starters, the characters repeatedly refer to the game as "Shadows of the Colossus", they're using a controller that's clearly not the DualShock 2, and during a mid-film montage of the characters playing the game, they're shown battling the bosses in totally random, non-chronological order.

We'll cut it some slack for actually engaging with video games as an art form on a thematic level, but the fact that they couldn't even get the game's name right is pretty damn embarrassing.
