12 Times Pokemon Legitimately DIED
3. Luxray (Pokémon The Movie: I Choose You!)
2017's I Choose You! was a bold attempt at trying to retell the story of Ash Ketchum whilst incorporating more influences from the games and all the subsequent generations up to Gen VII.
Released in celebration of the anime's 20th anniversary, the movie loosely retells Ash's journey through Kanto, reliving various major plot points from the anime such as the capture, evolving, and release of Butterfree, finding an abandoned Charmander, Ash defending Pikachu from a flock of Spearow, all the things that emotionally ruined us as kids, brought back to life in glorious HD.
One of the bigger changes was Ash's new companions, aspiring professor Sorrel and Verity, the daughter of a famous Pokémon trainer. As the group settle down around a campfire, Ash recounts the dream he had under the spell of a following Marshadow, whereby Pokémon didn't exist and he had to go school and do boring things like geography and English literature *shudder*. Sorrel responds by saying as wacky as that world may be, it is possible for Pokémon to leave them, regaling the time he was injured and caught in a blizzard, and his family Luxray found him and laid beside him to keep him warm.
The act saved Sorrel's life but ultimately cost Luxray its own, eventually freezing to death.
