12 Times Pokemon Legitimately DIED
4. Marowak (Pokémon Origins)
Look we all knew Marowak was going to turn up sooner or later, let's just get through it.
The story of Cubone and Marowak has ravaged the emotional state of Pokémon players since Generation I, with most of Cubone's Pokédex entries revolving around the fact that it wears the skull of its deceased mother as a mask, and often weeps for her alone.
While there are inaccuracies in the legend (Cubones and Marowaks have appeared together in the anime, Cubones hatch from eggs already wearing the skull in the games, etc.), it has, for the most part, stood up throughout the franchise's life, before being fully realised in an episode of Pokémon Origins.
In episode two of the mini-series, Red arrives at Lavender Town and visits the Pokémon House, where he is told by Reina that the resident Cubone was nearly poached by some Team Rocket Grunts before being intercepted by Cubone's mother Marowak. While the Cubone escaped, the Grunt, infuriated by Marowak's actions, kills the mother with a stun baton.
The harrowing encounter leaves Cubone rightfully hostile towards humans (with the exception of Mr. Fuji) but later changes it's stance after being reunited with the spirit of it's dead mother.
