12 Unbelievable Indie Games That Deserved Your Attention In 2013
10. The Novelist (PC)
Released at the tail end of the year, The Novelist is what would happen if The Sims had consequences. The game follows one family over the course of a summer away from home, focusing on the changes that simple decisions can have on work, family relationships and others. Main character Dan must juggle his attempts to write a new book with keeping his marriage steady and maintain the bond with his son but it seems there is never a way to get everything perfect. Through looking at little details and delving in to character history at various points in the game, The Novelist plays out very much like one of the bigger games of the year, Beyond Two Souls, where the cinematic element of the game at times seems more important. This, much like BTS, has its problems and at times the game can seem a little unfulfilling you're left thinking that if you could implement your own answers to each solution, as opposed to those set before you, you could be doing things a lot better. There's still a lot to delve in to, and the game does deliver an enjoyable and rewarding experience overall.
