7. Gruntilda (Banjo Kazooie)

While it's hard to name one Rare title as the best, Banjo Kazooie would probably top a lot of people's lists. On a console that can already lay claim to probably the best 3D platformer of all time (Super Mario 64), Banjo Kazooie's acclaim is impressive. The title characters themselves, Banjo and Kazooie, have earned a place in gaming history as one of its favourite tag teams, with sheer likability and goofiness. Of course, they needed a villain to topple though €“ enter Gruntilda, the ever rhyming witch of Spiral Mountain. She kidnaps Banjo's sister Tooty so she can steal her youthful looks and become the most beautiful woman in the land €“ truly a heinous crime.With a little more forward planning (she only seems to try and steal Tooty's looks when Banjo and Kazooie are defeated?), she would probably have been successful. The fact that she's stopped by the Bird 'n' Bear (who learnt all their skills from a mole) means she should retire her broomstick and cauldron in shame.
