12 Video Games You Presumed Were Massive Flops (That Really Weren't)

4. The Getaway: Black Monday

The Getaway was one of the better GTA clones to arrive in the wake of GTA III's release, with a rather jaw-dropping depiction of contemporary London, a delightfully cinematic style, and a sadistic, bloody streak throughout. The game sold 3.5 million units, which isn't bad at all for a PS2-exclusive, brand new IP. The second game, Black Monday, received a more muted reception from critics, and was therefore quickly forgotten as a sequel most people don't even remember. But that's not the end of the story. Black Monday was not a sales juggernaut, that's for sure, but it still sold 1.78 million copies, roughly half of what the original did, ensuring it wasn't the flat-out flop that many quarters would like you to believe. It still led to the development of a PS3-exclusive Getaway game, didn't it? That said game never ended up being released is neither here nor there: Sony still had enough faith in Black Monday's performance to greenlight a third game, so to say the game flopped is absurd.
