12 Video Games That Will Change How You See The World

11. Papers, Please

spec ops the line
Lucas Pope

Set in the fictional, dystopian Arstotzka, you take on the role of an immigration officer, quietly going about your business, letting through those with the correct paper work, and sending away the fakers.

Getting through the day and fulfilling ever tighter quotas sees you take home your daily salary to feed, warm and secure your dependent family – who never seem to contribute in any way other than to get sick and hungry.

The game starts slow, with the attempted illegal immigrants obvious and the money coming in easily enough. But when pay cuts hit, quotas become tighter and means of evading detection more complex, you’ll notice that your pay starts to suffer the penalties. All of a sudden you have to spend the night hours playing a game of "Who gets food tonight?" with your family.

The moral decisions get harder too. Whilst before it was ‘Random Person A’ who wants to earn some money, suddenly you’re faced with the crying mother whose son you allowed through moments earlier, but forgot one of her many ID badges herself. Is doing the right thing worth risking your job and the lives of your family?

Of course, whilst Papers, Please may occasionally force us to question what is right or wrong, a secure state or fascist dictatorship, a terrorist or a freedom fighter, what it really does is firmly put us in the shoes of those miserable workers at airport security.

No wonder they don’t have a sense of humour!
