13 Flat Out Lies We Were Told Just To Sell A Video Game
2. Spore Will Have A Huge Universe With Plenty To Do
The Lie: Will "The Sims" Wright's ambitious creature simulator will allow players to evolve from the smallest of creatures to developing a huge civilisation with an unprecedented level of detail and content. The Truth: Spore basically turned out to be 5 different mini-games stuck together, none of which really delivered on their promises because Wright clearly spread his ideas too thinly. The concept of evolution was heavy-handed (you simply complete each mini-game and BAM, you're in the next one), and a more gradual approach would have suited the game's longevity far better: instead, gamers got a wildly disappointing effort that wasn't good for more than a few mediocre hours of play. Many of the more intricate features shown off in demos were excised from the final game, presumably in order to appeal to a more mainstream user-base (namely those who bought The Sims), but the end result was weirdly lacking and therefore failed to replicate the sales success of Wright's most famous franchise.
