13 Flat Out Lies We Were Told Just To Sell A Video Game
12. Duke Nukem Forever Would Be Worth The 15-Year Wait
The Lie: Duke Nukem Forever (nicknamed Duke Nukem Taking Forever by the gaming press) would be worth the protracted 15-year development cycle, living up to the classically violent, hilarious original series. The Truth: Fans had been deprived of a great Duke game for so long that, even though everything they knew told them better, they couldn't help but get swept up in the hype over a new Duke Nukem. As it turned out, though, those 15 years had mostly been spent goofing off or at the bar, because Forever truly played like a game that was, well, 15 years old. The poor controls, so-so graphics, repetitive gameplay and entrenched sexism all felt like carry-overs from a bygone era, yet Duke had just failed to evolve with the times. Had Forever become a self-conscious parody of the earlier games in the series, it could have sufficiently adapted itself for the modern world of gaming, but instead, the final game was just clunky, boring and nowhere near as fun as the earlier entries. Sales fell far short of expectations, though, so apparently not everyone believed 3D Realms' party line.
