Twitch's most-followed streamer, Ninja, incited outrage this past summer when he declared that he wouldn't stream alongside female gamers for the sake of his marriage and to avoid the inevitable rumours it would create.

Prominent streamers, both male and female, along with gamers and the press were vocally opposed to the remarks, which given Ninja's industry influence were seen as making it more difficult for female streamers to succeed in a male-dominated, wildly sexist industry.

Ninja did attempt to "clarify" his comments, citing concerns of online harassment, though many were left unconvinced and felt that he should be setting a stronger example, especially as the "toxicity" stems from the very fanbase he handsomely profits from.

The controversy died down for a while, until Ninja was nominated for (and eventually won) the Content Creator of the Year award at The Game Awards.

Some felt that it was tone-deaf for the show's creator, Geoff Keighley, to grant Ninja a platform considering his previous remarks, and that the award probably should've gone to someone putting more positivity back into the industry.
