13 Severely Underrated Horror Games You Must Play For Halloween

12. Haunting Ground

If Haunting Ground seems like a re-skinned Clock Tower, that's because it's basically a spin-off of that illustrious series. It's not hard to see the genetic similarities - with no way to defend herself, Fiona Belli must make her way through a decrepit castle loaded with traps and puzzles. And if that isn't enough, Fiona also has to contend with assailants who wish to perform acts that I'm not even going to begin describing here, and that's a big part of what makes Haunting Ground so disturbing - with a shirt that's practically cutting off circulation and a skirt that borders on non-existent, Fiona's position as an object of desire is never in question. The game makes it no secret that Fiona's attackers are lusting after her and, depending on where you stand, Fiona's sexualization either serves to amplify the terror in an all-too-real way, or cheapens the whole experience. Can sexuality be used as a potent source of fear? Are we more terrified due to Fiona's helplessness? Or is exploitation spelled the same way no matter how you look at it? There have been arguments for both sides of the debate for years, so Haunting Ground's effectiveness really depends on your perspective. Still, if you're looking for a solid survival horror experience, Haunting Ground is definitely one of the better titles.
