14 Awesome-Sounding Video Game Sequels That Will Never Happen
2. Half-Life 3
There is no video game sequel anywhere near as requested as Half-Life 3, after Half-Life 2: Episode Two dropped almost a decade ago and left fans on an agonising cliffhanger as to the conclusion of Gordon Freeman's journey.
Half-Life 3 has long since become both a major point of frustration and derision even for gamers who've never played the series, and given Valve's track record with the franchise, it's safe to assume that whatever they ended up making would've probably been fantastic.
Why It Will Never Happen: In late August of this year, Half-Life writer Marc Laidlaw (who left Valve in 2016) posted a thinly-veiled plot dump of what would've happened in his proposed version of Half-Life 2: Episode 3.
While this was by no means an authoritative or canonical reveal, it did provide some fascinating insight into the direction the game probably would've taken. The unfortunate by-product of this is that it's about as official confirmation as fans are going to get that the game, be it Episode 3 or a proper third Half-Life, is dead.
There's no way someone creatively linked to the series would risk giving away the entire game's plot unless he knew that his narrative wouldn't be used and the game wasn't in development.
And if that's not enough, the aforementioned, "Valve is a distributor now" excuse is perfectly valid. Best to make peace with this now and be pleasantly surprised if it is somehow announced one day.
