14 Best SNES Games You Might Have Missed
7. Hagane
Bit of a hipster choice on this one, but if you're feeling inclined to check out something different, Hagane is your go to.
Sega had the Shinobi series, which was also challenging, whilst SNES owners got the one-off Hagane. It had comparable elements to it's cross-console cousin, but it was its own game in some regards.
Namely in how damn hard it was, for one. Nowadays, there's always a Dark Souls-esque/GTA-clone term bandying about, but if you'd never played a Sega ninja counterpart, you'd be caught off-guard. Tough combat, tricky platforming and a host of special moves were available to try and even the score, if you could get the hang of it.
The plot was standard neo-Japanese/cyberpunk lore; you're a cyborg ninja, saved from near death and sent to tackle warring ninja clans. It had bombastic rock music, cliched locales and corniness by the handful, but it was great.
Hagane didn't shift as anticipated, largely in part to the difficulty, but if you're feeling retrospective and after a challenge, it's worth digging around for.
