10. Galak-Z

Galak-Z is one of those games you just want to play more of... but it forever insists on chopping that desire down to size. Playing like your standard twin-stick shooter at first, you'll quickly unlock the ability to morph into a laser sword-wielding mech, notice you can hop over incoming fire and even block some hits directly with a pop-up shield.

Enemies then come thick and fast, the environment having a variety of hazards that'll do everything from poison you for a number of seconds, to lock your ship in place entirely. Basically, you need to learn every trick available, and fast.

At its most pleasurable highs, Galak-Z is a rip-roaring blast of nostalgia made modern, taking the likes of Asteroids/Geometry Wars' immortal appeal and injecting upgrade systems and a wider moveset - but on the flip-side... get only a few things wrong and your entire chapter's progress gets wiped entirely.

It's exactly as brutal as that sounds.
