14 Controversial Video Game Moments That Pissed Off The Fanboys
8. The War Z Doesn't Know What It Wants To Be!
Its never a good thing to falsely advertise a game especially through an online service known for putting gamers first above everything. But in the case of developer, Hammerpoint Interactive trying to distribute their survival horror game "The War Z" through the service called Steam, such a lesson wouldn't be learned until it was too late. Like many games promoted on Steam, The War Z had the advantage with its impressive beta, launched on October 2012. Zombie fans came running to (not from) the beta as if they were an undead horde out for flesh. Hooked, lined and suckered. Unfortunately, when the official game was launched the following month, it was met with an opposite reaction due to the fact that the finished product bared no resemblance to the impressive beta. Within two days, Valve tore down the game from the Steam store page due to inconsistencies with features listed on said page. Hammerpoint Interactive was then placed in the hot seat over falsely advertising the in-game features on Steam, and worked to rectify the issue. Although the developer managed to put everything was back in order and Valve put the game back on Steam, The War Z was about to face new outcry over its features; this time coming under fire from professional critics. The game was lauded for being simply bad and the rest was history. Although Hammerpoint Interactive tried rebranding the game to "Infestation: Survivor Series," the effort felt like more false advertising. Again, there is a lesson to be learned here, but its already too late for those who worked on The War Z. Or is it...whatever!
