14 Fan-Made Sonic Games That Succeed Where Sega Failed

9. Sonic: Megamix

By recompiling the source code of Sonic 1 into a new engine, Sonic: Megamix is one of the most intimidatingly massive modifications to ever exist, and even cooler yet, still runs on original Mega Drive hardware.

Sonic: Megamix is a brand new game with 5 playable characters. Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, Mighty the Armadillo and Shadow all play very differently and can unlock separate paths, meaning you can play Megamix fives times over before you've even seen everything that's inside it.

Regrettably, Megamix has one caveat, as it was never truly finished. "Team Megamix" eventually fell apart, and the game is now a single man project, who intends to simply finish what's left of it.

If there's any bright side to the end of the game's development, the current designer also runs Headcannon Games, one of the three development studios currently designing Sega's Sonic Mania.

Hard work definitely pays off in the end.
