Metro 2033 is a wonderfully grim game, and from the very beginning the player is forced to deal with extreme combat situations against creatures desperate for a bite of human flesh. There is little to no ammo available, with all the good cartridges kept safe for trading, and rather unhelpfully, you need to shoot about three magazines from an AK to actually kill anything. Including humans. About half an hour into the game, the player takes a ride through the abandoned and irradiated tunnels with some other NPCs, and the scene depicted by the given screenshot is what he wakes up to. No warning whatsoever, and a very rapid rising need for new underwear.
7. The Darkness 2 - His Sword Says Yes But His Face Says No
The Darkness 2 is arguably one of the best FPS games of the last generation, albeit a tragically overlooked one, thanks to a distinctive visual style and gripping gameplay. There is a plethora of fairly interesting things going around in the game, and the early enemy reactions to Jackie's powers are especially amusing to behold, especially when it comes to their little terrified faces. The mobsters aren't expecting a thousand years old demon to tear them apart, so they behave accordingly. Look him - sure, he is holding some sort of a magical blade, but the look on his face says that he didn't know what he was getting into, charging at our protagonist like that.
