3. Far Cry 3
Far Cry 4 and Primal are both very solid games in their own right, but nothing blew our hair back quite like this third main instalment. As the series had been floundering for years, releasing offshoots and incremental additions of bygone titles, Far Cry 3 fired out the gates with the menacing Vaas, before showing off some open-world gameplay that was inviting as hell.
Chained machete-attacks, outposts you could clear however you liked, vehicles to drive, hang gliders to fly, abilities to unlock and a million things to see and do - this was such a landmark achievement in design, Ubi pretty much released it again with the near-identical Far Cry 4, and it's gone on to influence the likes of Ghost Recon: Wild Lands since.
