15 Awesome Video Games From 2017 You Probably Missed

2. Mario & Rabbids: Kingdom Battle

Mario rabbids kingdom battle
Ubisoft/Nintendo

Mostly hand-waved away as some random third-party, non-Nintendo experiment, Mario & Rabbids is genuinely one of the most fun, accessible and deceptively deep strategy games I've played.

Taking the standard isometric style of XCOM, Ubisoft change the very mentality associated with planning a given turn. Rather than employing a defence-focused style that always means you've got a contingency in mind if things go sideways - though this does factor in - Kingdom Battle is all about combo multipliers.

Combining your characters' abilities with one another (putting someone in overwatch mode, then booting an enemy into the air so you're doubling up on attack damage), or just trying to do as many things per turn as possible (leaping off a foe's head to get more distance) - you start to see with just how much you can get away with every time.

Soon you'll be dominating the field, having also placed traps and precognitive strikes for the enemy, all in hands down one of the best looking games on the Switch.
