15 Best Indie Video Games Of 2016 (So Far)
10. This War Of Mine: The Little Ones
From a game thoroughly on the charm offensive, to one that makes an unbelievably effective comment on the effects of war on the general populace. Actually inspired and somewhat based on the Siege of Sarajevo in Bosnia, The Little Ones takes the base game of This War of Mine and adds the element of children to the mix.
Already you were tasked with keeping a band of survivors alive for as long as possible, foraging for food and conversing with each other just to stay sane, but add in the idea of protecting children from the realities of war, and the whole game takes on a far more real and impactful edge.
Thankfully (...ish) the little tikes can't actually perish - although to be honest I don't think I could take living with the corpses of children in an already very draining game. Still, your goals are to do whatever's necessary to see the next day, all the while balancing the need to forage for items and heal past wounds, with the preservation of their innocence and a carefree lifestyle.
A window into the hardships of parenthood, the realities of war and the absolute atrocities thousands are forced to endure when the bombs stop being dropped, This War of Mine could easily be a spiritual sequel to any big budget shooter - it's a real eye-opener in the most memorable way.
