6. Cold Fear
The second entry in the chill-ogy, Cold Fear was the second game from the team behind 2001's Alone in the Dark reboot for the PS1 (not mentioned here because it was cack). Set in Russian waters aboard a whaling ship in the Bering Strait, our hero is tasked with aiding the doomed vessel.
As a member of the Coast Guard, unlikely hero Tom Hansen isn't a walking bullet sponge equipped to the gills with firepower. Instead, faced against a parasitic entity and the involvement of third party forces, Hansen is thrown in the deep end not long from the start and has to both and uncover what's what.
Technically, it was an impressive game. Characters and objects reacted with the swaying boat and tidal conditions, which added some instability to the combat. There was no inventory system, so medicinal items were used on the fly, and ammo was only held to the limit of the equipped weapons, adding an element of tactics over hoarding.
Sadly, Cold Fear torpedoed. Despite good reviews, the RE4 comparisons essentially scuttled any promise and it sank amidst the wave of more successful games.
