7. Extermination
Coming as part of a trilogy of entries set in cold climates, we'll get the [snow]ball rolling with Extermination.
Released in the early days of the PS2's lifespan, Extermination was another third person horror/shooter akin to Resident Evil, its setting was praised for being somewhat different to the PS1's catalogue.
As a member of the US Marine Corp sent to investigate an Antarctic research base's distress signal. Things go awry from the start, including the team's entry to the base, and you suddenly discover why the distress signal was actually asking for the base to be airstrike'd instead.
The main draw to Extermination was the dichotomy in its shooter gameplay: it handled well, and encouraged you to blend running away with taking enemies out, but also offering limited ammunition. Even to the point that it wouldn't replenish once picked up, either.
As much as can be said for Extermination, it was a solid action/horror for its time. Vastly outdated by the time Resident Evil 4 came around, it was still a great title for near-launch PS2 fans.
