Ruined by the mass confusion around how the new Hitman would be distributed, arguably, in the long term it still paid off. After releasing the first episode in March of this year, people are still playing Hitman, so credit where credit is due, IO Interactive's strategy worked for all intents and purposes.

Back in 2012, Hitman: Absolution re-worked all the aspects of a Hitman game: improving the shooting mechanics, adding environmental weapons, updating the disguise system, hiding bodies, etc, but failed on what truly made the Hitman games great. Freedom of choice; how you kill your target/s in a massive, living, breathing map. Absolution was linear and limited with the disguise system being close to pointless unless you "Blended In".

Much like Splinter Cell Blacklist, the new, simply-titled 'Hitman' came along, boasting all the positive points of Absolution, but all the freedom and choice of a classic Hitman resulting in an incredibly replayable experience, which is often hard to achieve these days.
