With all that being said about The Last of Us, you wouldn't think anything would top it, and if this were a list debating the biggest emotional gut-punches in gaming history, perhaps it would be up top. Instead, what makes a game amazing should walk a perfect line between immersive, entertaining and engaging gameplay whilst also providing a high production value and a really gripping plot with a hefty narrative drive. Mass Effect 2 is that game, and easily the best entry into the sci-fi genre across any medium. Comprised of an entire galaxy of races all with their own histories, world-events, technology and inter-species tales to tell, the second ME put you in the shoes of the resurrected Commander Shepard, gathering up a ragtag bunch of alien warriors in a bid to save the galaxy from the over-powered Reapers. There's far more to it of course, and the fact that the final level is called the 'Suicide Mission' should give you an idea of how many things can be tinkered with. But from seeing your previous hero's transformation into a half-cyborg badass to equipping your ship with enough firepower to turn the tide, every single part of Mass Effect 2 is immaculate.
