Nintendo's approach to the Switch's online infrastructure has been baffling so far, perhaps even troubling.

They were hugely vague about the online subscription model before the console's release (which has since been delayed until 2018), and most gamers were also hugely skeptical of their announcement that voice chat and party play would take place through a mobile phone app rather than on the console itself.

Now that the app has launched alongside Splatoon 2, those fears have been confirmed: if you swipe out of the app, you lose the ability to voice chat, and players are required to keep their phone screen turned on during play, which is a massive drain on any phone's battery.

Players are naturally baffled by what's an embarrassing black mark on the Switch's otherwise sturdy launch, a reminder that as many steps forward as Nintendo makes, they're so, so behind the times when it comes to online functionality.
