Spend any significant amount of time playing The Witcher 3 and you’ll become very familiar with Roach, Geralt’s trusty steed. She’s loyal and omnipresent, but she’s also notoriously twitchy and unresponsive to the point where it’s become a joke among the community. There’s even a quest in the Blood & Wine expansion that goes out of its way to acknowledge this.

In order to hunt down a wraith haunting an herbalist named Pinastri, Geralt ingests a potion that will allow him to track it down. However the brew causes him to hallucinate, one of the illusions being his ability to communicate with Roach. What follows is a series of one-liners and in jokes that poke fun at the love/hate relationship players have with this particular mare.

The entire quest is essentially one giant fourth wall break that takes you completely by surprise, and it’s a real treat for Witcher fans. While very funny, it actually ends on a somewhat poignant note as the potion wears off and Geralt can no longer understand Roach, who you realize is his most loyal and trusted friend. It’s a perfect blend of humor and genuinely good storytelling, which is of course typical of the Witcher series, and what makes these games consistently entertaining from top to bottom.
