13. Vito Scaletta - Mafia 2

If you thought you could enter a video game named after infamous Italian crime families, assume the role of a member of said gang, and not participate in heinous deeds, then you're gravely mistaken.

Following his service in the American army during World War 2, Vito Scaletta returns to find that his family are in severe debt due to a loan obtained by Vito's late father, and are being harassed by loan sharks. Vito and his best friend, Joe, begin taking on odd jobs for the mafia in order to make some money, but this lands him in prison.

His mother dies while he is incarcerated, and instead of giving up his criminal tendencies, he throws himself deeper into the mob in order to provide for himself and the only family he has left: his sister.

Ironically, Vito's mob connections drive a wedge between him and his sister anyway.

Vito's journey started with noble intentions (alleviating his family's debt), but the deeper he got the harder it was to get out. One could argue that greater powers in both law enforcement and different criminal organisations manipulated Vito into committing so many violent acts, but you know what they say: he made his bed.
