8. Defence Grid: The Awakening - 8th December, 2008
There are several key components to make a good Tower Defence game. It needs to be astatically pleasing, have a lot of variety, have a good difficulty level and curve, and most importantly, it has to simply be enjoyable. Defence Grid has all of the above and more. Released in 2008 by Hidden Path entertainment, Defence Grid: The Awakening is regarded by many as the greatest tower defence game of all time. It hits all the marks it needed to, but went above and beyond the call of duty. Beautiful environments and a glorious narrator makes this game a pleasure for your eyes and ears. The maps and enemies are varied and the mechanics are near perfection, especially for an older game. The sequel may have been good (apart from the whole Workshop fiasco), but it could never live up the originals charm.
